FAQ
Questions, answered.
What is engineered stone?
Engineered stone is a man-made countertop surface created by binding natural minerals together with a binder rather than quarrying a solid slab from the earth. The most common type is engineered quartz, made from roughly 90 percent ground natural quartz combined with resins and pigments. Because it is manufactured, engineered stone offers consistent color and pattern along with built-in performance features like a non-porous surface.
Is quartz an engineered stone?
Yes. Quartz countertops are the leading form of engineered stone. They are produced by grinding natural quartz, one of the hardest minerals on earth, and binding it with polymer resin and pigment under pressure. This is different from quartzite, which is a natural stone quarried in solid slabs despite the similar name.
Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?
No. Quartz is engineered from ground natural quartz bound in resin, which makes the surface non-porous. Unlike granite, it never needs to be resealed. The stain resistance is built in at the factory and lasts the life of the countertop, which is the single biggest care advantage quartz has over natural stone.
Can you put hot pots and pans on a quartz countertop?
It is not worth the risk. The resin that binds quartz is sensitive to high heat, and setting a hot pan, pot, or baking sheet directly on the surface can scorch or discolor it, sometimes permanently. Always use a trivet or hot pad. This matters even more in a Phoenix kitchen during summer, when cookware comes off the stove very hot.
Can you use vinegar or bleach on quartz?
Both are best avoided for routine cleaning. Bleach, ammonia, and other harsh or high-alkaline cleaners can dull or discolor the resin, and acidic cleaners like vinegar and lemon can wear down the finish if used regularly. Stick to mild soap and water or a pH-neutral cleaner to keep the surface looking new.
Does quartz fade or discolor in the sun?
It can. Many quartz products are not rated for prolonged direct sunlight, and over time intense exposure can cause fading or a yellow tint. In Phoenix, where sun is strong year-round, keep that in mind for counters under large windows and avoid using standard indoor quartz for outdoor kitchens. Window coverings on the sunniest exposures help protect the color.
