FAQ
Questions, answered.
What is the difference between shaker and slab cabinet doors?
A shaker door is a five-piece door with a flat center panel set inside a square-edged frame, so it has a defined border and a subtle shadow line. A slab door is a single flat panel with no frame and no detailing at all. Shaker reads classic and versatile, while slab reads sleek and modern. Both are door face styles, which is a separate decision from how the door mounts to the cabinet box.
Are shaker or slab cabinets more popular?
Shaker is widely regarded as the most popular cabinet door style in American kitchens because it fits almost any design, from traditional to transitional to modern farmhouse. Slab is the faster-growing choice in contemporary, modern, and European-style kitchens. In the Phoenix market you see plenty of both, with shaker leading overall and slab common in newer modern-desert builds.
Which door style is best for a modern or small kitchen?
Slab doors suit modern kitchens best, with their flat, minimal look and clean lines. They also work well in small kitchens because the unbroken surfaces read as calm and can make a compact space feel larger and less busy. Shaker still works in modern kitchens too, especially in a simple painted finish, but slab is the more contemporary choice.
Are frameless cabinets better than framed cabinets?
Neither is better in every situation. Frameless construction gives you wider drawer boxes, full access to the interior, and a clean modern look, which is why it suits contemporary kitchens and smaller Phoenix-area condos where storage is tight. Framed construction is sturdy, traditional, and works with the widest range of door styles, including inset. The right choice depends on the look you want, your storage priorities, and your budget.
What cabinet colors are trending for 2026?
Three families lead 2026: deep nature-inspired greens such as olive, moss and forest; warm neutrals such as mushroom, greige, putty and khaki; and moody blues from classic navy to inky indigo. Natural wood stains in walnut and white oak are back as well. NKBA survey data puts green at the top of designer color preferences, with blue close behind.
Should I paint my whole kitchen one color or use two?
Two-tone remains one of the most popular approaches and is often easier to live with. A lighter perimeter with a colored island or colored lower cabinets lets you use a bold shade without committing the whole room. Single-color kitchens feel calmer and suit smaller footprints. Both are current, so kitchen size and natural light usually decide it.
How do I choose a cabinet color that will not look dated in five years?
Pick the countertop first, then choose a cabinet color that lives comfortably with its undertone, since the slab is typically the harder element to change later. Muted, complex shades tend to age better than highly saturated ones, and matte or satin finishes generally hold up better than high gloss. If you are unsure, keep the perimeter neutral.
